When they got a short distance from me, they realized that I wasn't going to swerve, so they did, throwing themselves onto the ditch. A burst of machine gun fire hit the minibus and one of the bullets shattered the right-hand mirror. I saw the three off-road vehicles struggling to maneuver and start chasing me again, but they had lost a lot of ground. I decided to head downstream, the only safest place, given that upstream was the Banda stronghold. My vehicle was faster than theirs and I was able to definitively outrun them after a crossroads, several kilometers ahead. I don't remember much about that trip.
I passed through destroyed, deserted, dead towns and villages. Sometimes corpses appeared on the asphalt and forced me to swerve to avoid them. Dozens of them. Maybe those people had died trying to Special Data escape, maybe they had been killed by some gang. I headed approximately north east of Rome, to look for another refuge. Already from the campaigns I crossed the scenario was no different. Cars even left in the middle of the land, now almost devoured by weeds. Abandoned car I entered a town with no more signs. Burnt houses and half-collapsed buildings welcomed me in dead silence. There didn't seem to be anyone there, the streets were empty, some cars had been left in the middle of the road, their doors wide open, as if their occupants had suddenly had to leave them.
I wandered for a few minutes through the streets of yet another abandoned town, up to a small square where a large, still intact building stood. On the wall of a destroyed house that stood in front I read Piazza della Constituente and some memories came back to the surface. I had already been there. That town was what remained of Valmontone and that palace was the Palazzo Doria-Pamphilj. The door was closed, so I fired a few shots until the magazine ran out, but eventually I managed to get in. There was almost nothing left inside, as usual everything that could be used had already been taken. However, I found a room on the first floor to settle in.
